Newfoundland and Labrador is in for another night of wet and windy conditions, with some parts of the island expected to see winds gust north of 100 km/h and the potential for localized flooding.
As of 4:30 p.m. NT on Tuesday, there were 22 weather warnings in place across the province from Environment Canada. Much of the island is under rainfall and wind warnings, while parts of Labrador could see rain or snow this evening and into Wednesday.
"Wet and windy is a pretty good summary for this evening," Tiffany Cheeks, a meteorologist with Environment Canada's Gander Weather Office, told CBC Radio. "We're not in a great weather pattern right now, unfortunately."
The rain and winds have caused power outages on parts of the Burin Peninsula, along with central and western Newfoundland. As of 7:15 p.m. NT Tuesday, Newfoundland Power had reported that just shy of 700 customers were without power due to severe weather conditions on the island.
Areas like Port aux Basques on the southwest coast are expected to be the hardest hit. Another 40 to 50 millimetres of rain could fall overnight and into Wednesday, meaning the area could see up to 130 mm of rain over a 36-hour period stretching back to Monday.
Areas of the Burin Peninsula have already seen upwards of 75 mm of rain, Cheeks said, with more on the way. Similar warnings are also in place for the south coast of Newfoundland.
"Just a week ago we got the remnants of hurricane Melissa, and then this weather front came in. So we've been in the rain for quite a bit, some time right now," Port aux Basques Mayor Mark Andrews said.
A Wreckhouse wind warning is also in effect, which could bring southeasterly winds upwards of 100 km/h. A tractor trailer truck had overturned in the Wreckhouse area earlier on Tuesday.
Cheeks said winds subsided there in the afternoon, but are expected to ramp back up around midnight.
Adverse weather conditions have cancelled Marine Atlantic crossings between Port aux Basques and North Sydney, N.S. for Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.
Parts of the Avalon Peninsula are also under a wind warning. Winds could reach between 80 and 100 km/h, and similar warnings are also in place across the Bonavista Peninsula, central Newfoundland and western Newfoundland.
Parts of the southern Avalon could see between 60 and 80 mm of rain. The west coast could see another 20-30 mm, while central Newfoundland could see between 10 and 25 mm.
In Labrador, the precipitation could fall as either rain or snow depending on where you are. Labrador West saw 17 centimetres of snow on Monday, Cheeks said, and Churchill Falls and the vicinity remains under a snowfall warning. Another 15-25 cm of snow could fall on Wednesday, she said.
Meanwhile, Red Bay to L'Anse au Clair is under a rainfall warning with between 50 to 70 mm possibly falling.
