Heavy rain disrupts life in Hyderabad on Friday evening, hail and tree falls reported

Sudden thunderstorm in Hyderabad causes havoc with heavy rain, hail, tree falls, and power outages on April 18, 2025.

A sudden, unexpected thunderstorm augmented by heavy winds wreaked havoc in several parts of Hyderabad on Friday (April 18, 2025) evening, catching commuters off guard, causing treefalls and resulting in heavy inundation of roads at several locations. A few places such as Begumpet reported hail too. There was brief disruption of electricity supply in some areas due to tree fall incidents.

The day began with no indications of heavy rain, but it turned cloudy and humid around 4 p.m., leading to heavy wind and dust storms at several places soon after. The rain started lashing the eastern and southern parts of the city around 5 p.m., and gradually spread to other parts too. It poured continuously for an hour, with the heaviest rainfall recorded in Charminar, Bandlaguda and Nampally mandals.

Bandlaguda recorded the highest rainfall exceeding 8 cm by 7 p.m., followed by Bahadurpura which clocked almost 8 cm. Charminar received 7.6 cm and Nampally 7 cm, as per statistics obtained from the automatic weather stations across the city.

Bahadurpura, Amberpet, Khairatabad, Qutbullahpur, Asifnagar, Balanagar, Rajendranagar, Saidabad, Himayatnagar, Saroornagar, Musheerabad, Hayatnagar, and other areas too received considerable rainfall.

Residents of Begumpet posted on social media about hail in the area, while the Metro Rail station at Begumpet was reportedly shut for the commuters for a brief while, as the concourse area was flooded with rainwater. Flooding too was severe near Chikoti Gardens area of Begumpet.

Waterlogging on roads was also reported from Bahadurpura crossroads, Chintalkunta, Shilparamam, Rajbhavan Road, Erragadda, Basheerbagh, Koti, and other locations. Tree falls were reported from multiple locations, including Kachiguda, MGBS, Bahadurpura, Minister Road, near Secretariat, Saroornagar, Vijaynagar Colony, Kukatpally, Darussalam, High Court, BN Reddy Nagar, Sultan Bazar, Sindhi Colony, Methodist Colony and Chirag Ali Lane, leading to long power cuts. A tree fall beside Telugu Talli Flyover partially blocked the up ramp, blocking the way for vehicles.

Hyderabad Disaster Response & Asset Protection Agency said 60 tree falls were reported from various localities in the city.
