Hyderabad witnessed yet another successful organ transport on Saturday evening as a donor heart was moved from Kamineni Hospital in L.B. Nagar to Apollo Hospital in Jubilee Hills via a coordinated green corridor. The journey of approximately 23 km, involving both road and metro transit, was completed in 36 minutes, ensuring the organ reached the recipient in optimal condition.
The transport operation commenced at 8.04 p.m. when a team of doctors left Kamineni Hospital in an ambulance. Upon reaching Nagole metro station at 8.12 p.m., the heart was transferred to a metro train and transported to Jubilee Hills Checkpost metro station, where the medical team disembarked at 8.35 p.m. From there, an ambulance took over the final leg of the journey, delivering the organ to Apollo Hospital by 8.40 p.m., according to a doctor involved in the process.
The effort was led by Apollo Hospitals in collaboration with Telangana’s Jeevandan programme, a State initiative aimed at facilitating organ donation and transplantation.
The harvested organ was that of 49-year-old Kadari Jangaiah from Nalgonda, who was declared brain dead at Kamineni Hospital on March 8. He had collapsed at his home on March 3 due to giddiness and was later diagnosed with irreversible brain damage, a representative from Jeevandan confirmed.
The recipient, a 44-year-old married man with three children, was suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy with severe left ventricular dysfunction and heart failure. According to Dr. Manoj Kumar Agarwal, a cardiologist at Apollo Hospital, the patient’s condition had worsened significantly since February 19, requiring multiple hospital admissions. He was discharged on Friday but had to be readmitted in critical condition on Saturday, necessitating immediate intubation. “If we didn’t proceed with the transplant, he would not have survived,” Dr. Agarwal stated.
