Labour Minister and district in charge Santosh Lad has said that a new building will be constructed for the Government First College for Women at a total cost of ₹3.5 crore.

Laying the foundation stone and performing ‘bhoomi puja’ for the construction of the college building near the district stadium in Dharwad on Tuesday, Mr. Lad said that the college which was sanctioned by then Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in 2014 and began with a strength of 10 students, was now providing education to 450 girls.

The Minister said that after the midday meal scheme was started by the government, more girls started going to schools, and in several schools and colleges there were more girls to be seen than boys.

“Girls have been performing exceptionally well in academics on a regular basis. The government gave permission to start a separate college for women with the sole objective of encouraging more girls to pursue higher education,” he said.

Mr. Lad emphasised the need for students to understand the ideology of Basavanna and B.R. Ambedkar, who advocated the need for treating everyone equally. “Through the Constitution, Ambedkar has increased respect for women. These days more women are excelling in civil services examinations. Women now have a share in both house and farmland and the basis for all these developments is the Constitution of India for which Ambedkar should be remembered,” he said.

He said that because of the enthusiastic participation of the public, the government college for women was progressing rapidly and due to persistent efforts the college was now getting a permanent structure, he said.

Deputy Commissioner of Dharwad Divya Prabhu said that after considering complaints about the poor condition of the building where the classes were being conducted, alternative arrangements were made for the students and now it was getting a good structure because of the initiation taken by the Minister. She called on girls to make efforts to excel in their chosen field.
