Google now wants Pixel cameras to be more inclusive of skin tones.
Google kicked off its most important event of the year- the Google IO on Tuesday. The search giant announced upgrades to some of its existing services along with some breakthrough technology like the Project Starline, AI tool to detect tuberculosis, improvements to its camera app among others. Another important feature that was announced during the event has a lot to do with how cameras capture skin tones. Google now wants its phones' cameras to be smarter and more inclusive of skin tones. Over the years, if there is one thing that Pixel phones are known for, it is its cameras. But now Google is working to make its phones smarter at capturing diverse skin tones. It is getting support for different types of skin tones and different types of Hairs. For this, the company has collaborated with various imaging experts. “For people of colour, photography has not always seen us as we want to be seen, even on some of our own Google products. As a part of our ongoing commitment to product inclusion, we’re working to make technology more accessible and equitable. To ensure our camera and imagery products work for everyone, we’ve partnered with industry experts to ensure that users of all skin tones feel accurately and beautifully seen,”, Android and Google Play’s VP Sameer Samat said in the event. He hinted that the camera improvements can be seen on Pixel devices this fall. This could also mean that the new technology will be rolled out with the new Pixel 6, which is speculated to arrive later this year.
