Former Congress MLA Mohiuddin Bava booked for threatening New Mangalore Port Deputy Chairperson

In his complaint to the police, the Secretary of NMPA said that the former MLA, along with two of his associates, gatecrashed into the chamber of Deputy Chairperson S. Shanthi around 8 p.m. on June 9 with a demand for settling a pending bill. Besides obstructing her from performing her official duty, the former MLA prevented the officer from going out of the chamber.
The Panambur police booked former MLA B. A. Mohiuddin Bava on charges of attempting to obstruct and threaten a public servant — Deputy Chairperson of New Mangalore Port Authority — from discharging her official duties.
In his complaint to the police, the Secretary of NMPA said that Mr. Bava, along with two of his associates, gatecrashed into the chamber of Deputy Chairperson S. Shanthi around 8 p.m. on June 9 with a demand for settling a pending bill. Besides obstructing her from performing her official duty, the former MLA prevented the officer from going out of the chamber.
When the Deputy Chairperson managed to leave her chamber, Mr. Bava and his associates followed her. They allegedly waylaid her car and got into an argument with her. The accused allegedly cautioned the officer that labourers might commit suicide if the bill was not settled.
Panambur police have registered cases of attempt to suicide to compel or restrain a public servant from discharging official duty, use of criminal force to prevent a public servant, threat to a public servant to influence official action, obstructing a public servant, wrongful confinement and wrongful restraint under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita.
Mr. Bava was a Congress MLA representing Mangaluru City North constituency from 2013-18. He lost to BJP’s Y. Bharath Shetty in the 2018 Assembly elections. When the Congress denied him the ticket in the 2023 elections, he contested as a JD(S) candidate from Mangaluru City North and polled 5,256 votes. Dr. Shetty won the election by polling 1,03,531 votes defeating his Congress rival Inayath Ali by a margin of 32,922 votes.
