As public anger over grooming gang abuse continues to simmer, independent MP Rupert Lowe has launched a crowdfunded enquiry into the scandal, raising more than £600,000 to investigate what he calls “repeated failures” by police and state authorities to protect vulnerable girls.
The two-week-long ‘Rape Gang Enquiry’ began hearings in London on Monday, bringing together victims, families, experts and witnesses to examine how abuse was allowed to continue in towns and cities across the country for years.
The probe is being funded entirely through public donations and is not backed by the government.
The enquiry, initiated by Great Yarmouth MP Rupert Lowe, is focused on gathering evidence, testimony and scrutiny related to grooming gangs and institutional responses to the abuse.
Speaking at the start of the hearings, Lowe said the enquiry was driven by frustration over inaction and ignored warnings.
“This enquiry is about action. We have gathered evidence, we will listen carefully over the coming two weeks, and we will then act,” he said.
