
Family trapped in a house due to landslide, one woman rescued

Family trapped, two missing in landslide at Vijayawada; rescue efforts hampered by heavy rain, officials issue caution.
Two persons of a family were trapped and two others were missing when landslide occurred and fell on the house at Sunnambattelu area in Vijayawada in the early hours on Saturday (August 31, 2024).
Locals said that boulders rolled down and fell on the house, located n the slopes of a hill near Moghalrajpuram, due to heavy rains that have been lashing since Friday (August 30, 2024) night, the locals said.
Speaking to The Hindu, Machavaram Circle Inspector, Prakash, said that a family was trapped in the house due to landslide. An old woman was rescued and efforts are on to rescue the remaining victims, the CI said.
“Instructions have been given to vacate the thatched and soaked near the hills,” the CI said.
“The rescue operation was affected due to heavy rain. We are trying to save the family members,” said a local Ramana, involved in the rescue operation.
Officials sounded alert and asked the residents in Gunadala, Moghalrajpuram, Bhavanipuram and other areas not to stay in damaged houses as there was heavy rain prediction.
The Kanaka Durga temple authorities have closed the Indrakeeladri Ghat road as a precautionary measure.
