Four airports in the country will have facial recognition technology (FRT) for passengers by June 2022. It will cost Rs 165.43 crore to the government. This information was revealed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) in response to a Right to Information (RTI) query filed by India Today.
We asked how many airports have facial recognition cameras, their names and the number of cameras with each of them. The AAI said in its response that "Installation of facial recognition cameras is in progress at 04 AAI Airports namely Varanasi, Vijayawada, Pune and Kolkata and likely to be completed by June 2022. All eGates under the project will have facial recognition capability."
