Expert committee to probe electric vehicle mishaps, says Nitin Gadkari

Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday constituted an expert committee to probe mishaps involving electric vehicles. Centre will issue quality-centric guidelines soon.
Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday constituted an expert Committee to enquire into incidents involving electric vehicles and make recommendations on remedial steps.
This comes after several incidents of e-bikes catching fire and emitting thick smoke in Tamil Nadu and other states. Gadkari said companies may take advance action to recall all defective batches of vehicles immediately.
An electric bike emitted smoke in Tamil Nadu's Thiruppur on April 11, raising alarms over safety of e-scooters once again. This was the fourth such incident in three weeks since a father-daughter duo died after an electric bike exploded in Trichy.

Taking to Twitter, Gadkari said, "We have constituted an expert committee to enquire into these incidents and make recommendations on remedial steps. Based on the reports, we will issue necessary orders on the defaulting companies. We will soon issue quality-centric guidelines for electric vehicles."
"If any company is found negligent in their processes, a heavy penalty will be imposed and a recall of all defective vehicles will also be ordered," he added.
