Ex-home minister of Maharashtra Anil Deshmukh gets bail in money laundering case

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday granted bail to former home minister of Maharashtra, Anil Deshmukh.
The Bombay High Court on Tuesday granted bail to former Home Minister of Maharashtra and NCP leader Anil Deshmukh in a money laundering case.
The high court said the bail will come into effect only on October 13. It also ordered Deshmukh to deposit Rs 1 lakh as surety and present himself at the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office when summoned.
Deshmukh’s bail application was rejected by the special court under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) earlier this year when the court held that prima facie there was proof of Deshmukh’s involvement in money laundering. The court stated that the evidence was to indicate that Deshmukh had exercised “undue influence” over transfers and postings of police officers.
The allegations against Deshmukh were that, as Home Minister of Maharashtra, he had misused his power for personal gains. The ED had allegedly made a case of illegal gratification of Rs 4.7 crore and had shown a chain of money being extorted from businessmen in Mumbai. As per the ED, the money was diverted to Deshmukh’s trust via the hawala route.
The case was first registered by the CBI and then the ED probed the money laundering angle.
