Even as Europe imposes sanctions on Russia for its military aggression in Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called out the silence of the 'leaders of Europe' over their silence on Ukraine's Nato membership. He said, "Today I asked the 27 leaders of Europe whether Ukraine will be in NATO. I asked directly. Everyone is afraid, does not answer."
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Nato) has become the focal point of Russia’s war on Ukraine. The US promised a Nato response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Thursday morning.
Nato was founded after World War II in 1949 with 12 members from North America and Europe. Now, Nato is a 30-member military alliance.
Ukraine is not a member of Nato. It has been waiting to be a Nato member since 2008. It was promised membership.
