Differently abled persons protest demanding proper assessment

TARATDAC protests for proper disability assessment and facilities at Dindigul Government Medical College Hospital.

Tamil Nadu Association for the Rights of All Types of Differently Abled and Caregivers (TARATDAC) on Monday staged a protest in front of Dindigul Government Medical College Hospital demanding proper assessment of the nature of their disability.

The members said that the assessment was being conducted at the office concerned at the Collectorate and then again at the Medical College Hospital. The assessment should be conducted at the Medical College Hospital by qualified doctors, they said.

They demanded that the identity cards should be issued properly along with the signatures of the officials who issue the identity cards. They also demanded that it was being issued for only a limited period.

The validity of the identity cards should be increased as the people in many cases have to travel long distances and wait for long hours to get the identity cards, they said, adding that special camps should be held at the Medical College Hospital for the benefit of the differently abled persons.

Adequate facilities should be provided to the differently abled persons at the Medical College Hospital and priority given to them in places like pharmacies and for scanning and blood tests. The differently abled should be provided wheel chair facilities and it should be ensured that the beds and washrooms are cleaned regularly, they said.

They also demanded that ramps be provided on the premises, installation of information boards so that people know where to go for their treatment and parking fees exemption. The members called off the protest after the authorities assured them that the set of demands would be looked into in a week’s time.
