Karnataka education department has issued a clarification saying that it hasn't dropped Bhagat Singh's chapter from class 10 textbooks.
The Karnataka government issued a clarification on Tuesday saying that it hasn't dropped a chapter related to freedom fighter Bhagat Singh from school textbooks. Earlier, there were reports of removal of a lesson on Bhagat Singh from a class 10 textbook in the BJP-ruled state.
The state education department has issued a clarification saying that it hasn't dropped Bhagat Singh's portion from class 10 textbooks and the textbooks are in the printing stage.
Earlier, few organisations, including All-India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO) and All-India Save Education Committee (AISEC), claimed that the Karnataka government had omitted a lesson on Bhagat Singh and included a speech by RSS founder Keshav Baliram Hedgewar in a revised Kannada textbook for students of class 10.
Education Minister BC Nagesh had defended the inclusion of a speech by Hedgewar in the revised Kannada textbook. He said the textbook does not contain anything about Hedgewar or RSS, but only his speech on what should be an inspiration to people, especially the youth, and that those who have raised objections have not gone through the textbook.
Following the reports of the exclusion of chapter related to Bhagat Singh, several chief ministers, including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, said it was an insult to the sacrifice made by the iconic freedom fighter, and demanded a roll back of the decision.
