Delhi University to discontinue MPhil from next academic session in line with NEP

Delhi University will discontinue its MPhil programme from the next academic session (2022-23) as per the NEP directives.
Delhi University is set to discontinue its MPhil programmes running in various department from the next academic programme 2022-23, it announced in a notification. This decision is in line with the new National Education Policy (NEP) directives.
Certain teachers have criticised the decision saying that this will be disadvantageous for economically weaker students and women. No new students will be enrolled in the MPhil programme at DU. But those already enrolled will complete studying their course, a university official informed.
As per PTI, Former Executive Council member Abha Dev Habib said, "NEP-2020 is all about widening the gap between the haves and have nots. Either commit to doing a PhD or remain without a research degree.”
“The NEP, which is floating on advertisement of 'choice', is taking away real choices which students had. Students with disadvantageous backgrounds looked up to MPhil as a research degree they could afford before going towards teaching jobs,” she added.
"This degree (MPhil) is being discontinued not because of any organic need of the system but because of NEP-2020," she said.
As opposed to PhD, MPhil is a short-term research degree for students, said Habib, which provides them an exposure to research work and adds to their CV.
She also said that as per social scientists, students with MPhil did better in their PhDs.
