Delhi: One arrested in JNU sexual harassment case

On Sunday, the Delhi Police arrested a man accused of molesting a PhD student within the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus in Delhi on January 17.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Gaurav Sharma said, “On the night of January 17, the Vasant Kunj police station received a call regarding attempt to rape a JNU student. The girl’s statement was recorded. To track down the perpetrator, we scanned CCTV footage from more than a thousand cameras but the quality was very poor.”
He added, “We managed to trace the route of the accused on the night of the incident. He came out of the north gate of the campus on his scooter. We tracked down his house, raided it and arrested him. We also recovered the clothes he had worn on the day of the incident.”
The accused has been identified as 27-year-old Akshay Dolai from West Bengal. He lives in a rented house in Munirka and works at a mobile repair shop. On the morning of the incident, he had had a fight with his wife, the police said. In the evening, after shutting his shop, he got drunk and went to JNU. No entry was made at the register kept at the campus entry gate.
According to the police, the accused was well-acquainted with the roads of JNU as he had been going there since 2011 for ticketing work. At around 11.45 pm on January 17, the PhD student came out for a jog. The accused followed her and assaulted her in an isolated part of the campus, the police said. He fled the spot after she raised an alarm.
The incident has sparked protests by JNU students as it has brought back into the spotlight the issue of security in the vast campus.
