Decoding Congress' Rajya Sabha list and LoP number game
India Today
The Congress has named six nominees for Rajya Sabha elections across five states, blending renominated leaders with new faces. With strategic picks and alliance support, the party is poised to retain Leader of Opposition strength.
The Congress has named six nominees for the upcoming biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha from Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Telangana.
The list, approved by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, will also be instrumental in determining whether he retains his position as Leader of the Opposition in the Upper House. However, the elections are expected to be smooth, without many twists and turns.
The list, which has sent many leaders into a huddle of speculation and murmurs, includes a mix of renominated leaders and relatively lesser-known faces, signalling what party insiders describe as a “hyperlocal” approach to candidate selection.
Currently, the Congress has around 27 members in the Rajya Sabha, significantly lower than its historical strength in the Upper House. With limited vacancies available to the party, the leadership appears to have prioritised local leadership and political loyalty.
From Haryana, the Congress has nominated Karamvir Singh Boudh, a leader from the Scheduled Caste community. Party sources say his candidature was backed by senior Congress leader and close aide of Rahul Gandhi, K Raju.
However, the choice reportedly created confusion within the state unit. One senior leader said that even Haryana leaders were initially unsure about who the candidate was.

As per the Bill, those involved in unlawful conversions on the pretext of marriage will be punished with imprisonment of seven years and shall also be liable for a fine of Rs 1 lakh. Violations in respect of a minor, a person of unsound mind, a woman or a person belonging to the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe will be punished with imprisonment of seven years and a fine of Rs 5 lakh.
