Centre gives final approval for the project, which would be implemented at a cost of ₹98.46 crore
Decks have been cleared for the development of the Chengannur railway station, considered the gateway to the Sabarimala Ayyappa temple.
Kodikunnil Suresh, MP, said the Union government had given its final approval for the project, which would be implemented at a cost of ₹98.46 crore.
“The development of the Chengannur railway station is a long-pending demand. It is now set to become a reality. The project aims to transform Chengannur, a major transit hub for numerous pilgrims and travellers, with modern amenities and high standards,” Mr. Suresh said.
He said that as part of the station’s development, a new terminal building, a pilgrim centre, offices, and 12-unit railway quarters would be constructed. A new foot overbridge six metres wide and an air concourse 12 metres wide will also be built. There will be a covered driveway for vehicles, dedicated entry points for autos and taxis, and a special access route for buses during the pilgrimage season.
Separate travel routes for departing and arriving passengers will be created and the existing platforms will be renovated. In addition to the two existing lifts, nine more will be installed. Besides the two existing escalators, six more will be installed.
“The development of the Chengannur railway station is part of various measures being taken to improve travel facilities in the Mavelikara Lok Sabha constituency. The project will be given due consideration and completed within the stipulated time,” Mr. Suresh said.
The MP has recently stressed the need for more train stoppages at Chengannur to better serve both the local population and pilgrims.
