The flashpoint was Eilish’s acceptance speech at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday night, where she won Song of the Year. Wearing an “ICE OUT” pin, the 24-year-old singer spoke against US immigration enforcement and border policies. “No one is illegal on stolen land,” she said, urging people to keep protesting and speaking up. The comments travelled far beyond the Grammy audience. Within hours, critics began questioning whether Eilish’s words matched her personal life, pointing out that she owns a multi-million-dollar property in Los Angeles. Several politicians joined the criticism on Monday. Utah Senator Mike Lee said that anyone publicly talking about “stolen land” should be willing to give up their own property to Native Americans. Minnesota state representative Walter Hudson questioned whether such statements implied rejecting the legitimacy of property ownership across the United States.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis added to the debate by suggesting that Eilish should consider giving up her southern California mansion if she truly believed the land was stolen. That remark drew a sharp but simple response from Elon Musk, who replied, “Exactly,” on X, openly siding with DeSantis and reinforcing the charge of hypocrisy. Commentators and media personalities also weighed in. Some mocked Eilish for speaking about immigration enforcement while living behind gates, walls and private security. Others described her speech as celebrity posturing, arguing that the singer’s lifestyle stood in direct contrast to the message she delivered on stage.
