Former IAS officer U. Sagayam demands security due to threats after exposing granite scam in Tamil Nadu.
Demanding security to former IAS officer U. Sagayam who recently penned a letter to Special Public Prosecutor over his inability to appear in the special court due to fear of his life, members of Communist Party of India (CPI) staged a protest at Melur in the district on Saturday.
P. Suresh Kumar, coordinator, said that the former officer who exposed the massive granite scam in Tamil Nadu in 2014 as a special officer appointed by the Madras High Court flagged his inability to appear in a special court and provide evidence of the scam, citing threat to his life.
“Mr. Sagayam said he was provided an armed guard in accordance with the 2014 Madras High Court order, due to clear threat to his life in the backdrop of his appointment as the Legal Commissioner and Special Officer to probe the irregularities in granite mining,” Mr. Suresh Kumar added.
But, even after several irregularities found by him exposed loss of crores of rupees to the government, the State government was not minding about his security, he added.
“He fought against mafias, government and business people to protect our land and people from exploitation,” he stated.
People, for whom he fought, would not easily leave him alone in the fight against the powerful, he asserted.
He added that their protest would intensify if the protection for Mr. Sagayam was not ordered by the government.
