Construction of a comprehensive centre for mental health and neurosciences on the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) campus is nearing completion. Along with the existing psychiatric services, the centre will feature clinics for geriatric psychiatry, dementia, movement disorders, seizures, and memory.
The State government decided to set up the Tamil Nadu Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (TNIMHANS) in 2022. The construction of the building is set to be completed in about three weeks, and the process to procure equipment through the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation is in progress, according to officials.
TNIMHANS will have all psychiatry-related services. A half of the existing outpatient units at IMH will be moved to the new facility as there are space constraints. Wards would also be established to provide additional bed capacity for patients, officials added.
“There will be a geriatric psychiatry clinic, dementia clinic, movement disorder clinic, post head injury neurobehavioural rehabilitation, seizure clinic, and memory clinic,” an official said.
Post-head injury, some will experience behavioural issues as well as cognitive deficits, requiring re-training. In movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, there may be neuropsychiatric complications, he explained. “There are certain border areas in neurology and psychiatry; for instance, in movement disorders, dementia, post-head injury, and seizure disorders, where a person can experience psychiatric complications. So, there are plans to offer treatment for neuropsychiatric conditions,” he added.
The State government had made the announcement to establish TNIMHANS by upgrading IMH in its 2022-2023 Budget. The Health department, in its policy note 2023-2024, stated that the government had sanctioned TNIMHANS by strengthening and upgrading IMH into a Centre of Excellence to provide comprehensive services in the areas of mental health, neurology, and neuroscience research, besides serving as a teaching and training institution, at a cost of ₹40 crore.
