Members of the Congress party on Thursday staged a demonstration here condemning the Union government for the steep rise in prices of cooking gas, diesel and petrol.
Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) working president Mayura S. Jayakumar led the demonstration outside the District Collectorate here. He said the cadre conducted a mock funeral procession for an LPG cylinder alleging that cooking gas had become unaffordable for the public following the price hike. The protestors raised slogans condemning the fuel price hikes, he said.
Over 30 members, comprising Corporation councillors and party cadre, participated in the demonstration. This was part of the State-wide agitations called by TNCC president K.S. Alagiri to condemn the BJP-led government at the Centre for the hike in fuel and LPG prices. As of Thursday, the petrol and diesel prices were hiked nine times in 10 days, taking the total increase to ₹6.40 a litre.
