
Coimbatore records 13.3mm rainfall on Sunday

Coimbatore district experiences heavy rainfall, causing damage and prompting disaster response teams to be deployed.
Coimbatore district experienced rainfall for the second consecutive day on Sunday, recording an average of 13.3 mm between 8.30 a.m. and 6 p.m. The highest rainfall was reported at Chinnakallar in Valparai, at 54 mm, categorised as very heavy rainfall.
Six huts were reported damaged in different areas of the district. In Madukkarai, an elderly couple sustained minor injuries when the wall and roof of their home collapsed around midnight on Saturday. They are currently receiving treatment at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. Minister for Housing and Urban Development S. Muthusamy visited the couple and inspected several locations in the city.
The showers increased the flow in the Noyyal, reaching Chithirai Chavadi, around 7 km from Kooduthurai, the river’s point of origin, and continuing downstream to Perur.
District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar said the district administration is fully prepared to manage the situation. A 30-member team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is stationed at Valparai, and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed in Mettupalayam, Thondamuthur and Pollachi. Revenue department officials have been directed to respond promptly to any reports of rain-related damage, including crop loss in the outskirts. More than 90 relief centres have been kept ready, though none have been activated so far. There is no flood alert at present.
Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran said motor pumps with generator backups have been installed at all city subways to ensure continuous operation. Most lakes are approaching full capacity. A total of 50 teams have been deployed for tree clearance, while 25 sullage lorries and around 75 motor pumps remain ready to manage any waterlogging.
Siruvani dam received 85 mm of rainfall, with the water level at 21.55 feet, against its full capacity of 49.53 feet.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert for Coimbatore district for 25 and 26 May, and an orange alert for 27 and 28 May. Rainfall is expected to be intense in the ghat areas during this period.
