Coimbatore Corporation plans temporary parking facility in Ukkadam to address parking challenges near bus stand and Smart Cities Mission lake.
The Coimbatore Corporation plans to establish a temporary parking facility on a vacant land in Ukkadam.
As part of the proposal, the civic body has begun erecting a barbed wire fence around the land, which is located opposite the Ukkadam police station.
The land, measuring approximately three acres, previously housed residential units of conservancy workers. The site has been earmarked to accommodate a portion of the Ukkadam bus stand in the future.
At present, the land remains unoccupied, and private buses and cars use it as parking space. Additionally, several vendors operate in the area, selling fish, juices, and fruits.
A senior official from the Coimbatore Corporation said fencing work has commenced to prevent further encroachments. The Ukkadam bus stand currently lacks a designated parking facility, and visitors to the Smart Cities Mission lake in the area also face challenges due to inadequate parking. To address these issues, the Corporation is considering using the land as a temporary parking facility until construction of the bus stand begins.
“We will review the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Ukkadam bus stand redevelopment before confirming the proposal. If the DPR includes provisions for parking in the same location, we will proceed accordingly. Otherwise, we will use the land for surface-level parking and introduce a fee-based system,” the official added.
