The policy will remain applicable for a period of 10 years or till such time a new policy is issued from the date of issuance, that is from January 11, 2025.

The State government has issued orders (a GO) on the new policy with Principal Secretary (Energy) Sandeep Kumar Sultania notifying the 82-page document on Saturday itself. Krishna Bhaskar, Singareni Collieries Chairman N. Balaram, MD of TGREDCO V. Aneela and others were present on the occasion.

According to the policy document, Telangana has vast solar potential with an average solar insolation of 5.5kWh per square metre for more than 300 sunshine days a year. It is also one of the top eight States in the country in terms of wind potential of 54,717 megawatt at the hub height of 150 metres and 24,835 MW if the hub height is lower at 120 metres. It states that the State has contracted capacity of 26,212 MW from all sources of energy generation including 4,000 MW from Yadadri Thermal Power Station and 2,474 MW upcoming solar capacity. The source-wise capacity, which included State’s share in the inter-State generating stations, is thermal 14,164 MW, solar 7,889 MW, distributed renewable energy 771 MW, wind 128 MW, hydro 2,518 MW, nuclear 211 MW, gas 439 MW, other non-conventional energy 93 MW.

The policy document states that the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has projected the State’s contracted capacity at 49,104 MW by 2029-30 and 66,694 MW by 2034-35 MW. It has indicated that there is potential to take up pumped storage hydel projects (PSPs) at on-river and off-river locations such as man made reservoirs, lift irrigation schemes and abandoned mines.

The objective of the policy is to ensure energy security of Telangana, provide reliable and affordable power to all consumers, ensure self-sufficiency and sustainability of power utilities, promote development of solar, wind and other RE projects, promote development of energy storage systems, promote production of green hydrogen and its derivatives, enhance the manufacturing ecosystem and boost investments and increase job potential in the State.

The document projects the capacity of solar energy at 18,874 MW, distributed RE at 4,330 MW, wind energy at 2,528 MW, energy storage at 3,805 MW, geothermal at 1,000 MW by 2029-30. By the same time the State is projected to have 6,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.
