Christians in Kerala re-enact Way of the Cross on Good Friday, reflecting on Christ's sacrifice and message of humanism.
Christians in Kerala gathered on Good Friday (April 18, 2025) to re-enact the Way of the Cross, the woeful trek Jesus Christ is believed to have taken while bearing a cross and wearing a crown of thorns from Jerusalem to Calvary, where the Bible says he was crucified.
Several church leaders guided their congregations in solemn processions through town centres in Kerala to reverently recall Christ’s message and his sacrifice for humanity’s spiritual betterment. Priests and members of the laity carried wooden crosses to identify themselves with Christ’s suffering.
In Thiruvananthapuram, Cardinal Mar Baselios Cleemis led the Good Friday prayers at St Mary’s Cathedral in Pattom. He reminded followers of the humanism and tolerance inherent in Christ’s message.
At the iconic Palayam St Joseph Cathedral, Archbishop Thomas Jessayyan Netto flagged the corrosive menace of narcotic drugs on society and sought reformation, prayers, empathy and rehabilitation for those who fell into their vicious influence.
Special prayers were also held at the Lourdes Ferona Church at PMG, Madre De Deus Church in Vettukadu, and St George Orthodox Church at Spencer Junction.
On Good Friday, thousands of devotees trekked up to Kurishumudi Holy Hill of the Cross.
