The TN BJP will gift gold rings to children born in a Chennai hospital on Prime Minister Modi’s birthday on September 17. Congress and DMK leaders have reacted to this decision by the state BJP.
In lieu of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday on Saturday, September 17, the Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will gift gold rings to children born on the same day at a hospital in Chennai. Each ring will contain 2 grams of gold and is expected to cost Rs 5,000.
The union minister of state for fisheries, animal husbandry, dairying and information and broadcasting, L Murugan, spoke about the scheme in Delhi. The TN BJP identified RSRM hospital in Chennai, and all the children born in the hospital on September 17 will be given rings containing 2 grams of gold.
Apart from this, as PM Modi is turning 72, 720 kg of fish will be distributed in Kolathur constituency, which also happens to be CM MK Stalin's constituency. The fish distribution will happen under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojna which encourages people to consume fish.
Reacting to this, DMK spokesperson, A Saravanan, said, “We wish PM Modi a very happy birthday. They have learnt that they are not freebies after all. You are trying to empower people by giving this to them and their life will be uplifted. Whatever reason that has fueled this thought, we welcome it.”

He further added, “The BJP will now understand it is essential not to depreciate any welfare measure and to put a bad stamp on it. The PM preached that it is not advisable and that it would bring down the economy. It is an election gimmick and the stand against freebies won't work. They have stopped talking about it and are indulging in it. We welcome that.”
Congress MLA Vijayadharani, reacting to the BJP’s decision to give gold rings to children born on PM Modi’s birthday in a hospital in Chennai, said, “As far the BJP's plan is concerned, here is a case that BJP has taken that giving freebies does not help the economy, help anybody. So, they should have focused on distributing educational materials or support to the economically weaker sections. The BJP might be trying to extend their influence in Tamil Nadu.”
