The renovated Poompuhar tourism complex opens, enhancing visitor amenities and promoting heritage-driven tourism in Mayiladuthurai district.
The renovated Poompuhar tourism complex in Sirkazhi taluk of Mayiladuthurai district was formally opened on Monday, marking a significant push to strengthen tourism facilities in one of the historically important coastal towns.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated the facility via video conference. The ₹23.6-crore project had been executed by the Tourism Department.
Minister for Backward Classes Welfare Siva. V. Meyyanathan, District Collector H. S. Srikanth, Poompuhar MLA Nivedha M. Murugan, Sirkazhi MLA M. Paneerselvam, Mayiladuthurai MLA S. Rajakumar, and District Tourism Officer Muthusamy were present.
The project was announced during the 2021–22 Assembly session, when the government identified heritage-driven tourism as a key pillar for regional development. Poompuhar, anciently known as Kaveripoompattinam and associated with the Sangam era, occupies a prominent place in Tamil history and literature, though inadequate visitor amenities had long constrained its tourism potential.
Administrative and financial sanction for the project was accorded on December 22, 2022. Improving the basic infrastructure and the overall visitor experience at the sprawling tourism complex was focus of the project.
Key components include the construction of a compound wall and arrival plaza, modern toilets, a cloakroom, gazebo, ticket counters, and a tourist information centre. A promenade and a large parking facility had been developed to ease congestion during peak seasons. Decorative landscaping, water supply and sanitation facilities, and extensive electrical work, including heritage-style lighting, have been executed.
