The organs of a 4-year-old brain dead kid at PGI Chandigarh saved the lives of three patients. The kid suffered a serious head injury on April 2 and was declared brain-dead when brought to the hospital.

The organs of a child, who was declared brain dead by the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, helped in saving the lives of three terminally ill patients.

Reportedly, a resident of Barnala, 4-year-old son Gurjot, suffered a serious head injury on April 2. He was brought to PGI Chandigarh for treatment but was declared brain dead on April 9.

The grieving family, while recuperating from their personal loss, decided to honour the life of Gurjot by donating his organs to those in need of a transplant.

As per a report published in The Indian Express, Gurjot's father said "Nothing can fill the void of losing our dear Gurjot, who will not be with us to celebrate his fifth birthday. But we are trying to draw consolation from the fact that Gurjot’s life will go on in others and will give them more days with their families.”

Lauding the family's decision to look beyond their own deficit and expressing their gratitude for their act, PGI director, Prof Surjit Singh, stated, “We at PGI are grateful and appreciate the will of the Singh family to share the gift of life with three terminally ill organ failure patients. Every transplant provides a new beginning for our patients and is an incredible achievement for the entire team involved in transplantation as well.”

While one donation was made to a patient admitted to ILBS, New Delhi in need of a liver transplant, and the remaining two were from PGI Chandigarh. They received kidneys and pancreas from the deceased.

For transporting the donated liver via road, a green corridor was created from Chandigarh to Delhi and the remaining transplants were completed by April 10.
