
Chain snatching suspect gunned down during recovery of weapons

Police gun down chain snatching suspect in Chennai after intensive search and chase at airport; investigation ongoing.
In the early hours of Wednesday (March 26, 2025), a special team of police personnel gunned down a 28-year-old suspect who was apprehended in connection with a series of chain snatching on Tuesday (March 25, 2025).
On Tuesday (March 25, 2025) morning, chain snatching incidents were reported from at least six places in the Southern Zone of Greater Chennai City Police limits. The suspects who came on bike and struck at the victims on the road between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. and fled after snatching chains from who were walking on the roads. All incidents were reported to the police control room.
Greater Chennai City Police Commissioner A. Arun ordered the police personnel to conduct an intensive check across the city and conduct a thorough search for suspects in Adyar, St. Thomas Mount, T. Nagar police districts.
Over 100 police personnel fanned across the city and scrutinised the CCTV footage gathered from several places. They got clues that the suspects were on their way to the airport. Police quickly acted and alerted airport authorities including air traffic control(ATC). After chasing the suspects, the police stopped a flight bound to Hyderabad and an inspector of police, and his men entered the aircraft. They arrested one suspect and deboarded him from the plane.
Subsequently, another suspect was nabbed at the entrance of airport and one more suspect was caught in Ongole said police. They named the arrested suspects as Jafar Gulam Husain, 28, of Ambivli in Mumbai and two others from Mumbai.
A senior police officer said when the special team escorted Jafar Gulam Hussain to recover of weapons stashed by the gang to a place near Taramani Railway station, he whipped out a gun from a bike parked there and opened fire at the police personnel. In self-defence, they returned fire, and he collapsed. Further investigation is on.
