Candidates and workers: What Congress may need beyond Priyanka Gandhi's 7 promises in UP polls
India Today
After Rahul Gandhi’s efforts through 2012, 2014, 2017 and 2019 state and parliamentary elections failed to revive the Congress in Uttar Pradesh, Priyanka Gandhi aims to turn the corner for the party with her promises. Priyanka Gandhi has led the Opposition’s charge against the BJP particularly since the Lakhimpur Kheri violence that claimed eight lives.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress's general secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh, has been on a promise-making spree. As of Monday, Priyanka Gandhi has made seven-plus-one promises as she tries to position the Congress as the principal challenger to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly election 2022.
However, the Congress might need more than the promises that Priyanka Gandhi has been making to Uttar Pradesh voters, who have rejected the party consistently since 1989. After losing power to the Janata Dal in 1989, it has been a downhill journey for the Congress in seven consecutive assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.
