Canada can't rule out participation in Iran war: Mark Carney's big remark

Canada cannot “categorically rule out participation” in the ongoing war involving the US and Israel against Iran, Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Thursday, as the conflict entered its sixth day. His remarks came hours after Carney said he supported the strikes on Iran “with some regret,” and the conflict was “inconsistent with international law.”
“One can never categorically rule out participation,” he said alongside his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albanese, in Canberra. He also said that his country will “stand by our allies.”
Canada, a Nato member, shares strong defence ties with its ally, the US. Since both countries are part of Nato, Canadian forces can use US bases during joint missions.
Carney said his government had not been informed in advance about the US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran. “Geostrategically, hegemons are increasingly acting without constraint or respect for international norms or laws, while others bear the consequences. Now the extremes of this disruption are being played out in real time in the Middle East,” he said.
Carney said that Canada had neither been briefed about the strikes nor asked to participate. “We were not informed in advance, we were not asked to participate,” he said, adding that “prima facie, it appears that these actions are inconsistent with international law.”
However, Carney said determining whether the US and Israeli strikes violated international law would ultimately be “a judgment for others to make.”

Over the past week, social media has been abuzz with rumours claiming that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was killed in an Iranian missile strike. However, there remains no credible evidence. It coincided with his reported absence from cabinet meetings. However, Israel has released videos and images to assert that Netanyahu is alive.
