Can check-mate government if given right powers by Congress high command: Michael Lobo

In an interview with India Today TV, Congress MLA from Goa, Michael Lobo, opened up on his future plans and what he intended to do for the Congress party. He said that if given the right powers by the Congress high command, he could checkmate the government in 10 months.

Goa Congress MLA from Calangute, Michael Lobo, has a portrait of the former Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru in his living room. “It’s a rare picture of Nehruji playing cricket. I got it a few days back from someone, and now I plan to put it in my office,” said Lobo.

Post the assembly election results, the Congress MLA, for the first time, opened up to India Today TV on his future plans and what he intends to do for the Congress party.

The disappointment was visible on his face. If the Congress party had come to power in the coastal state, the Calangute MLA would have been given a lucrative ministry or even more. “I wasn’t thrown out of the BJP. They wanted me to stay and kept trying till the last minute. But I knew Congress was coming to power in Goa and I could sense that people wanted change. There was so much anger among people and yet we could not channelise that anger into votes. I am very disappointed,” he said.

Sources say that right before the state elections, Lobo told the veteran Congress leader Digambar Kamat that he wouldn’t create hurdles in his path to becoming the Chief Minister but would want the Deputy Chief Minister post for himself. Now that the tide has turned in the favour of BJP, the all-powerful Calangute MLA is not willing to sit idle and is eying the post of Leader of Opposition in the state assembly.

The Lobo camp says that Kamat has had his chances and missed the opportunity in 2017. Now it was time to turn to new leadership willing to bring about change.

Talking to India Today TV, Lobo said that he'd just joined the party. Hence, he would not be demanding the post but he’s in the race and would be willing to take the responsibility if the party high command feels that he is fit for the post. Party insiders say that Lobo has already communicated his desire to AICC Goa in charge Dinesh Gundu Rao.
