Bypoll to Asansol Lok Sabha seat vacated by Babul Supriyo to be held on April 12

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced that bypolls for Asansol Lok Sabha seat and four assembly seats - one each in West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Maharashtra - will be held on April 12.
Bypoll to Asansol Lok Sabha seat, along with four assembly seats, will be held on April 12, the Election Commission of India (ECI) declared on Saturday.
The assembly seats where bypolls will be held on April 12 are - Ballygunge (West Bengal), Khairagarh (Chhattisgarh), Bochaha (Bihar) and Kolhapur North (Maharashtra).
As per a notification by the EC, the notification for the bypolls will be issued on March 17. The last date of nominations is March 24, while the last date for withdrawal of candidates is March 28.
The counting of votes for the bypolls will be held on April 16.
The Asansol seat fell vacant after sitting MP Babul Supriyo resigned from the Lok Sabha in October of last year citing differences with the BJP. He later joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Ballygunge assembly seat in West Bengal, meanwhile, fell vacant after sitting MLA Subrata Mukherjee - a minister in the West Bengal government - died on November 4 last year following a brief illness.
Khairagarh assembly seat in Chhattisgarh was won by Devvrat Singh for the Congress in the 2018 assembly elections. The seat fell vacant after Singh, a four-time MLA and former MP, died of cardiac arrest in November of last year at the age of 52.
