Bengal Speaker Biman Banerjee slams Governor over Howrah bill

West Bengal Speaker Biman Banerjee on Thursday slammed Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar over the Howrah bill.
West Bengal Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee on Thursday accused Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar of stalling the Howrah Municipal Corporation Amendment Bill, failing to pass it, and relying on its fate.
While criticising the governor, Biman Banerjee cited a Supreme Court order in the Rajiv Gandhi murder case, claiming that the governor is not accepting cabinet decisions and that the Supreme Court order makes it clear that the governor must do so.
Banerjee also alleged that every time the governor visits the assembly, he holds a press conference and claims that he has passed or responded to every bill and that no bill is pending with him. However, he has yet to reply to the Howrah bill, which is affecting public services in the city.
In November 2020, the Assembly passed the Howrah Municipal Corporation Amendment Bill, which proposes excluding certain areas from the municipality's area. Previously, the governor said that the government had failed to provide specific information about the bill. If this bill is not passed by the government, Howrah Municipal Corporation elections will be delayed for a few years.
