Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhakhar has been named as the BJP’s pick for the next Vice President of India.
The BJP announced Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhakhar as its pick to be the next Vice President of India. BJP chief JP Nadda made the announcement after the party's parliamentary board met in Delhi to discuss their choice.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the meeting, which was attended by Union Ministers Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, and BJP National General Secretary BL Santosh, among others.
Jagdeep Dhankhar was in the national capital today and called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi before the prime minister left for the parliamentary board meeting. Jagdeep Dhankhar also met Home Minister Amit Shah last evening.
Governors of other states, including Madhya Pradesh and Manipur, also called on PM Modi. They are in the national capital to attend a dinner being hosted by outgoing President Ram Nath Kovind.
The parliamentary board is the BJP's apex organisational body, and its members include Modi and Union ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and Nitin Gadkari, besides party president JP Nadda, among others.
The vice presidential elections are slated to be held on August 6. The last date of filing nominations is July 19.
Vice President Venkaiah Naidu's term ends on August 10.
