Bappi Lahiri was born as Alokesh Lahiri in 1952 in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri. His father Aparesh Lahiri and mother Bansari Lahiri were Bengali singers and musicians. Bappi was the only child.
He began his musical journey at the age of 3. He learned to play the tabla and impressed one and all. At the start of his career, he was trained by his parents.
The singer went on to be known as the King Of Disco. He was nominated for the Best Music Director for the Filmfare Awards 6 times between 1982-2018. The veteran singer took home the Lifetime Achievement Award by Filmfare in 2018.
Lahiri was married to Chitrani Lahiri and the couple has two children, a son, Bappa Lahiri, and a daughter, Rema Lahiri.
Bappi Lahiri tested positive for Covid-19 in April last year, after which he was confined to full bed rest. A wheelchair with a lift was also installed at his Juhu residence for easy mobility and convenience. He was brought to the hospital after his health deteriorated on Tuesday, Friday 15 night and doctors tried to revive him but they couldn't.
