Anil Agarwal and his Rs 10-15k crore for health and education raises a bigger question

Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal's post-grief pledge has done more than signal generosity, it has reopened an uncomfortable conversation: when billionaires give, should they aim for scale, systems, or mere symbolism?
“I would like to put in 10,000 crore–15,000 crore in such an effort.” With these words, industrialist and businessman Anil Agarwal announced a major philanthropic intent following the recent loss of his son, signalling one of the largest personal pledges in recent years towards public welfare.
He further added, “Very humbly, in keeping with the wishes of my late son, I put forward a request to do something big in education or healthcare, or anything else that can benefit society.”
The statement came through a post on X, following Agarwal’s participation in the Prime Minister’s Roundtable with Global Energy Leaders on the sidelines of India Energy Week. The meeting, he said, was his first official engagement after the tragedy in his family.
In the post, Agarwal said he informed the Prime Minister that 75 per cent of his wealth would be returned to society, and that he would cease to be a promoter and work as a trustee.
The proposed contribution, he said, would be directed towards education, healthcare, or another area of public benefit, in line with the wishes of his late son.
Soon after Agarwal’s post, former corporate leader Mohandas Pai publicly suggested a specific direction for the funds.
