India Today
In this week's Fashion Friday, we decode Alia Bhatt’s style in and as Gangubai Kathiawadi.
“Kehte hain Kamathipura mein kabhi amavas ki raat nahi hoti, kyuki wahaan Gangubai rehti hai,” the trailer of Alia Bhatt’s highly-anticipated Gangubai Kathiawadi begins with this dramatic narration. And truly, the actress looks nothing less than the luminous moon in her beauteous white sarees throughout the trailer. Yes, she is the chand and her sartorial picks are an extended testimony of that.
Never underestimate the elegance of six yards! That’s the thought that constantly lingered in our minds as we watched the 3-minute-long trailer of the Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial venture. A woman in saree can conquer the world. And Alia, as Gangubai, is here to take her place in the male-dominated city and fight for the rights of sex workers’ children.
Gangu’s style is an important part of her personality. In a few brothel scenes, she is seen dressed in printed blouses and skirts in dark shades. But Gangu is her truest self, or you may say- a chand - in her white sarees. She wears a big red bindi and has her swag game on-point with her stylish sunglasses.
Read on as we decode Alia Bhatt’s style in and as Gangubai Kathiawadi in this week’s Fashion Friday.
THE WHITE SAREES
Gangu has a versatile collection of sarees, all white. From simple ones in cotton to the ones replete with intricate and rich embroideries - she has a white saree for every occasion. She visits courts, delivers public speeches, attends weddings and does everything else in a white saree.
For a court visit, she keeps it simple in a cotton saree with a basic blue border. For a wedding, she embraces an ornate drape amped with a heavy border featuring silver accents. In what appears to be a victorious moment, Alia makes a strong statement in a traditional red-border saree.
