A day after SC said that those languishing in jail under sedition charges can approach the courts to seek bail, Imam moved the Delhi high court on Thursday.
The Delhi riots accused Sharjeel Imam on Thursday approached the Delhi High Court seeking bail, a day after the Supreme court direction which asked the accused who were slapped with sedition charges to approach designated courts for bail.
The court is likely to hear the case on Friday.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed the use of the sedition law and directed the Centre and states not to register any fresh FIRs invoking sedition charges until the law is reviewed.

Former JNU student Sharjeel Imam was slapped with the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for allegedly giving inflammatory speeches at Delhi’s Jamia area and Aligarh Muslim university in Uttar Pradesh. He was subsequently charged with sedition by a Delhi court.
According to the fresh plea filed through advocate Tanvir Ahmed Mir, Imam has been in custody since January 2020 and the Allahabad High Court had granted bail to him in Aligarh speech FIR while opining that there was no call for violence.
The bail plea has said that the instant FIR was registered against Imam on January 25, 2020, simultaneously with four other FIRs across multiple states for the same speeches attributed to him.
