As many as 262 persons belonging to primitive Koraga tribes have received ration cards in Dakshina Kannada, while 14 received the cards in Udupi district, as part of the Development of Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) scheme.
As part of the scheme, the State and Union governments provide financial assistance for proposals that fill critical gaps and help in comprehensive socio-economic development of PVTGs. Koragas in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi and Jenu Kurubas in Mysuru, Chamarajanagar and Kodagu have been identified as PVTGs in Karnataka. The government conducted a special drive between December 20 and 27 to issue ration cards to PVTGs in the State.
Dakshina Kannada Deputy Director of Food and Civil Supplies B.S. Hemalata told reporters that a survey conducted by personnel of Integrated Tribal Development Programme found that 361 Koraga community members were found in need of ration cards. “Beneficiaries were mapped and ration cards were issued to 262 persons. Applications of 99 Koraga community members are pending because of technical faults in the caste and income certificate,” she said.
Udupi Deputy Director of Food and Civil Supplies Ravindra said ration cards were issued to 14 Koraga community members.
