Subhas Bhowmick, the celebrated former football player and former coach, died in Kolkata aged 73 after batting kidney-related illnesses for nearly four months.

Legendary former player and former coach Subhas Bhowmick died on Saturday in a Kolkata hospital. Bhowmick was battling kidney problems and was undergoing treatment for the past three and a half months.

As a player, Bhowmick was part of the Indian team that won bronze at the 1970 Asian Games. He played as a striker and player for a number of big clubs, including both Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan and East Bengal alongwith Mohammedan Sporting, Salgaocar and Churchill Brothers.

Bhowmick ended his playing career in 1979 and embarked on a successful coaching career. He led East Bengal to the ASEAN title in 2003 and to successive National League titles. He then replicated that success with Churchill Brothers as technical director.

Bhowmick had been admitted to a nursing home in Ekbalpur, Kolkata after testing positive with Covid 19.

"It’s sad to hear that Bhowmick-da, one of the greatest Footballers of his generation is no more. His invaluable contribution to Indian Football will always remain with us, and will never be forgotten. Indian Football has only got poorer. My condolences to his family. I share the grief," said All India Football Federation (AIFF) president Praful Patel.
