End of the road for Glenn Maxwell? Ponting predicts retirement after T20 World Cup
India Today
T20 World Cup: Ricky Ponting has hinted that Glenn Maxwell could be nearing retirement after Australia's early T20 World Cup exit. Ponting believes the February 20 match vs Oman may be Maxwell's final World Cup appearance.
Glenn Maxwell’s international future may be approaching a turning point, with former Australia captain Ricky Ponting suggesting the veteran all-rounder could be nearing the end of the road after the T20 World Cup.
Australia’s campaign in the 2026 edition ended in disappointment, with the side crashing out in the group stage and missing out on a Super 8 berth. The early exit has naturally sparked fresh debate around Australia’s senior core, and Ponting believes Maxwell may not be part of the next cycle.
Speaking to The ICC Review, Ponting was blunt in his assessment of where Maxwell stands as Australia look ahead.
"Glenn Maxwell, I don't think will be there," Ponting said. "I think it looks to me like his career is coming towards an end."
Australia still have one match left in the tournament, a February 20 clash against Oman in Kandy, and Ponting hinted it could carry added significance, potentially marking Maxwell’s final World Cup outing or even the last game of his international career.
Ponting, however, does expect several others to remain central to Australia’s plans as they rebuild toward 2028.

T20 World Cup: Zimbabwe missed out on qualifying for the tournament in 2024, but this time around, Sikandar Raza's men have secured their berth in the Super 8. It was Raza, with his inspirational leadership and attitude, aims to keep his side grounded and continue their journey towards bigger goals at the T20 World Cup 2026.
