16 more landfills will turn Delhi into 'garbage Capital', says chief minister Arvind Kejriwal

Every locality will have a garbage mountain if the BJP goes ahead with its plan of constructing 16 landfills, said the AAP leader.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said Delhi will turn into a 'garbage Capital', there will be stench and filth all around 24*7 and every locality will have a garbage mountain in front of it if the BJP-ruled Municipal Corporation of Delhi goes ahead with its plan of constructing 16 landfills to manage the Capital's mounting garbage crisis.

Talking about the three landfills-- Bhalswa, Ghazipur and Okhla--sheltering mounds of legacy waste at a press conference in Delhi on Friday, Kejriwal said, "The stink and stench of the garbage piled on these mountains breaches into areas several kilometres away. They attract pests and rodents, causing health hazards. The garbage mountains repeatedly catch fire, turning the whole area into a cloud of toxic smoke. The lives of those who live near the garbage piles have turned into a living hell."

"By now, we should have been working on clearing these garbage mountains...modern solid waste management technologies from across the globe should have been brought to Delhi and pressed into service to manage the garbage piling up at these three landfills. But as it stands, despite spending thousands of crores, the height of these mountains is increasing day by day," said the chief minister.

Alluding to reports that the BJP-ruled Municipal Corporation of Delhi is planning to identify land and bring in 16 more landfills, Kejriwal said, "If there are 16 more mountains of garbage all over Delhi, the life of every Delhiite will be at risk. All of us would be subjected to stink and toxic gases 24x7. Almost every area will have a garbage mountain of its own, it will bring along pests, rodents, diseases and what not.

"Leave aside being a world-renowned capital, Delhi will turn into a garbage capital," said the chief minister.
