ZP CEO urges strict penalties for roadside waste dumping in Mangaluru, emphasising cleanliness and plastic control measures.
Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Narwade Vinayak Karbhari on Thursday asked the Executive Officers of Taluk Panchayats and Panchayat Development Officers of Gram Panchayats to impose a penalty on those who throw, dump, and burn garbage on the roadside and other public areas. In case of failure to pay, a complaint should be filed against them at the respective police stations, he said.
During a video conference with the officials, the CEO asked the Executive Officers to submit an action taken report to him. The CEO also asked Gram Panchayats to clean the roadsides in their jurisdiction on the first and third Saturday of every month.
He asked Gram Panchayat officials to control the use of single-use plastics in their respective jurisdictions. Inspection and raids should be conducted to control the manufacture, supply, storage, sale, and distribution of banned plastic items, he said. At the same time, people should be made aware of alternative materials that can be used instead. The Executive Officers must set targets for the Gram Panchayats regarding the collection of penalties from the offenders, he added.
