Back in 1871, retired Irish soldier Michael Fitzgerald Lavelle took part in the Maori wars in New Zealand. He represented the British Army. When he retired, he came to Bangalore, where he came across an article about the Kolar Gold Fields. The old report by Lt John Warren hinted at possible gold reserves in Kolar, Karnataka.
After Tipu Sultan was killed by the British, the latter handed over Tipu's properties to Mysore. However, they retained Kolar and kept the rights to survey the land. Warren was thrilled to hear stories of people finding gold by digging with their bare hands during the rule of the Chola dynasty. So, he wanted to dig deeper to find some himself.
