Winter storm, snowfall warnings in effect across northeastern Ontario

A harsh winter storm hitting southern and eastern Ontario is creeping north, prompting Environment Canada to issue several weather warnings for parts of northeastern Ontario.
Winter storm warnings, snowfall warnings and freezing rain warnings have been issued from Parry Sound north to Timmins and from Sault Ste. Marie to Mattawa.
As a result, many school buses are cancelled on Wednesday. That includes buses from Massey over to Mattawa, including Espanola, Manitoulin Island, Sudbury and North Bay. They’re also cancelled south of North Bay down to Parry Sound, and from Temagami north to Cochrane including Timmins and Chapleau. Schools remain open.
Ontario’s 511 isn’t reporting any highway closures but does say highway conditions range from party snow covered to fully snow covered with some reduced visibility.
Environment Canada meteorologist Eric Tomlinson said it will be a messy weather situation.
"As we head towards Sudbury, North Bay, that's a really big mixed bag of precipitation for this event. It starts out as snow, but then it could switch over to a mix of ice pellets and freezing rain for some of this event," Tomlinson said.
"As you head further north, we expect more snow."
The area from Sault Ste. Marie north to Cochrane and stretching east past the Quebec border, is under a snowfall warning as of 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Up to 20 centimetres of snow could fall on that region according to Environment Canada, which is also warning of local blowing snow.
"Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions," wrote Environment Canada in its warnings. "Allow extra time for travel. If driving, turn on your lights, slow down and maintain a safe following distance."
