Why did Nehru internationalise Kashmir issue by taking it to UN, asks Nirmala Sitharaman

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman informed Rajya Sabha that the Kashmir issue was internationalised after former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru took the issue to the UN.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday accused Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, of internationalising the Kashmir issue by taking it to the UN. She added that the issue should not have gone to a global forum as it was an Indian issue.
Prime Minister Nehru had appealed to the UN Security Council through the petition filed in January 1948 following the outbreak of the first war between India and Pakistan. On the basis of this petition, the Security Council had established the UN Commission for India and Pakistan to mediate between the two countries.
Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Nirmala Sitharaman said,” It is (the Kashmir issue) essentially an India-related issue. The Congress took this issue to UN. Who took it? Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, our first Prime Minister, took the issue to UN. Why? Because Britishers might have made some suggestion to him that this issue wouldn’t improve otherwise, and PM Nehru took it to the UN.”

Referring to Pakistan, the finance minister stated, “Till today, our neighbours are misusing it (PM Nehru taking the Kashmir issue to the UN).”
