At least four people were killed, and 12 others injured after a portion of a cold storage facility collapsed in Prayagraj of Uttar Pradesh on Monday afternoon, triggering an ammonia gas leak and a major emergency response.
Officials said the injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals, where they are undergoing treatment. Rescue operations were still underway at the site, with fears that more people could be trapped under the debris.
Senior police officer Kuldeep Gunawat said the structure suddenly caved in, trapping workers under the debris. “All the injured workers have been rescued and admitted to hospital,” he said.
District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma said authorities were working to verify the identities of the victims and compile a list of those affected.
Police, fire brigade, NDRF and SDRF teams have been deployed for the rescue and relief work. Police Commissioner Joginder Kumar said an NDRF team has been called in from Varanasi, while three SDRF teams are already engaged in operations along with fire services.
Following the collapse, ammonia gas began leaking from the facility, prompting swift containment measures. Fire brigade teams were deployed to control the leak, while police and district administration officials secured the area to prevent further risk.
