Why a holy Hindu is buried and not cremated like a common Hindu
India Today
Unlike common Hindus, Sadhus or the holy Hindus are not cremated but given bhoo-samadhi (burial). It's believed that there is no requirement for the cremation of a holy Hindu's body as it does not entrap atman (soul).
Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad president Mahant Narendra Giri, who died by suicide, was given bhoo-samadhi (burial). The common practice among the Hindus for last rites of the dead is cremation.
Sadhus or the holy Hindus are an exception when they pass away. The Hindus believe in the existence of atman (soul) that transmigrates after the death of the body.
